The role of the LIA is to ensure, in the long term, a framework for Franco-Mexican cooperation in astronomy.
To achieve this, it is structured around two committees:
- The Steering Committee is composed of the French and Mexican LIA coordinators and the representatives of the sponsoring funding agencies. It serves as a link with the funding agencies and provides overall direction, based on input from the Scientific Committee.

- The Scientific Committee consists of several scientists from France and Mexico. This committee evaluates the proposals made to the LIA and is in charge of the scientific organization of the workshops and conferences.
